A few months ago, when I asked for suggestions on who has the best Chicken Fried Steak in Texas, Mel’s Country Café in Tomball did not make the list. According to the comments I received, Goodson’s was the best in Tomball, and one of the best in Texas. Well I’m here to tell you not only did Mel’s make my list it shot to the top.
This was one of the thinnest Chicken Fried Steaks I’ve had, with a thin breading. The breading had a nice peppery seasoning, but it was the meat that was tasty and moist. It could have been cut with a fork. As always, I got the creamy white gravy on the side. The gravy by itself wasn’t as seasoned as others, but once you dip the Chicken Fried Steak into it, it’s heavenly.
You have several Chicken Fried Steak options:
• Chicken Fried Steak Sandwich 6 oz. $5.50
• Chicken Fried Steak Salad (for those who are on a diet?) 8 oz $6.95
• Chicken Fried Steak small 8 oz $9.95 (this is what I had)
• Chicken Fried Steak large 16 oz $14.95
• Kids portion of Chicken Fried Steak 6 oz $5.95 (with one side)
They warn you on the menu that all entrees are prepared in-house and cooked to order, so it may take a little longer than other restaurants. Service was perfect. With your Chicken Fried Steak entrée you get 2 sides. I got a large portion of mashed potatoes with their creamy gravy, which was very good, and green beans. The green beans were good but not great. No Texas Toast here to waste calories.
There is a podium outside on the porch with a sign that says "wait to be seated." If there’s no one waiting outside, go in. It means you’ll be seated immediately.
Here is the story behind Mel’s Country Café.
