I don't think I know a single person who doesn't like ice cream. Some folks go for those wild, creative flavors (Maple Bacon Jalapeño Swirl, anyone?) while others just opt for a good vanilla, but I think we can all agree that a frozen scoop (or two) is the perfect antidote for the blazing Texas summer sun.
On August 9th, the capital city will host the 8th Annual Austin Ice Cream Festival. Locals and out-of-towners will head to Fiesta Gardens for the all-you-can-eat ice cream party, featuring national and regional brands. Past participants have included Amy's Ice Creams, Austin Scoops, Blue Bell, Coolhaus, GoodPops, Ice Cream Social, NadaMoo, Rita's Water Ice, The Melting Cone, Weezie's Frozen Custard and Yeti Frozen Custard. I'm sure many of those will be returning, along with some new ones too. Your $10 admission fee includes samples from each participating ice cream sponsor (some are just a taste while others are full-size scoops). Oh, and kids under 8 get in free!
The ice cream is not the only reason Fodor's calls this event one of the "10 Best Summer Food Festivals". There's live music, games, activities for the kids and several fun competitions. Think you can scarf down a half-gallon of ice cream in record time? If you're the fastest, you'll take home the coveted "big spoon" award (it will make your brain-freeze worthwhile!) In addition to the ice cream eating contest, awards are given for the best popsicle stick sculpture contest and best homemade ice cream.
You can feel great about supporting this worthy cause because the money raised from the Austin Ice Cream Festival benefits several local charities including the Austin Children’s Shelter, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Habibi's Hutch.
Bring your friends, bring your kids and even bring your dog (yes, dogs are allowed!) to indulge in sweet, creamy, frozen, delicious fun.
