The Good Times Are Rolling at Galveston’s Mardi Gras
When someone thinks of Mardi Gras, they usually think of New Orleans. And that makes sense since the first Mardi Gras in America is believed to have taken place in Louisiana on March 3, 1699. Add to that the fact that Louisiana is the only state in which Mardi Gras is actually a legal holiday, and you can see why people usually think of the Big Easy when they think Mardi Gras.
MardiGras3But this fun-filled celebration (also known as Carnival) actually dates back thousands of years and is celebrated in many countries all over the world. And in my humble opinion, you can find some of the best Mardi Gras celebrations right here in the Lone Star State!
In southeast Texas, you’ll find a huge celebration that rivals any Louisiana party. Mardi Gras Galveston is a huge event, the third largest Mardi Gras in the United States. The island’s 104th Carnival celebration began on February 6th and wraps up on Fat Tuesday, February 17th. During this time, you can take part in over 20 parades, scores of concerts, fun balcony parties, masked balls, and, of course, beads! More than 3 million are expected to be tossed during this spectacular celebration!
Mardi Gras GalvestonMardi Gras Galveston will be offering many other events, including Family Gras, which features entertainment, a coloring contest for the kids, and many other family friendly activities. You can see a schedule of all of the events, information about promotions, and everything else you’ll need on their website
And to make this event even more spectacular, you’ll get to experience Texas’ largest Mardi Gras in one of the most beautiful areas of this great state! Galveston is a charming, romantic island situated deep in the heart of south Texas. Here you’ll find miles of relaxing beaches, top of the line resort hotels and restaurants, wonderful galleries and shops, museums, a wealth of cultural and historic institutions, and the largest concentration of Victorian architecture in the country. Yes, Galveston sure has a lot to offer. But through February 17, the focus will be on their renowned Mardi Gras celebration…a party that I think will rival the one our fine neighbor to the East will be throwing!
