The Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays; I have always been interested by the events that led up to the birth of our nation and so impressed with the courage and fortitude it took to see things through. OK, the fact that I’m a huge fan of barbecues and fireworks may also have something to do with my love of this annual ritual.
Celebrating Independence Day with parades, barbecues, music, and fireworks has been a tradition almost from the beginning. As a matter of fact, Congress first authorized pyrotechnics as part of 4th of July celebrations in 1777, and today, more than 14,000 fireworks displays go off across the nation every July 4th. By the way, there are those who think that should be celebrated on July 2nd and not on the 4th because that’s the day when the Declaration of Independence was actually adopted and signed by our forefathers. But I’m glad it’s the 4th — the “2nd of July” just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
This year, I’ll be attending the July 4th Symphony and Fireworks in Downtown Austin on the banks of Lady Bird Lake at Vic Mathias Shores (formerly Auditorium Shores) and I won’t be alone! Tens of thousands of families will join me as we explore the wide variety of arts, crafts and food vendors and then are treated to a concert by the amazing Austin Symphony Orchestra! (The booths open at 4:00 and the concert begins at 8:30.) And then, at around 9:30, it’s time for…FIREWORKS! What can I say; I still get excited about pyrotechnics!
Austin’s July 4th Symphony and Fireworks event is one of the largest 4th of July Celebrations in the state…and its free! But if you can’t make it to Central Texas for Austin’s big event, almost every other major city in Texas will be hosting their own exciting 4th of July celebration! Below is a list of some of the other events.
Wherever you spend the Holiday this year, take a little time to reflect on just how fortunate we are to live in this great country…the land of the free and the home of the brave!
I want to wish y’all a happy and safe 4th of July!
