Every February, the city of San Antonio gets a huge infusion of cowboy culture as the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo converges on the AT&T Center/ Freeman Coliseum. This year’s event opens on Thursday, February 11 and runs through Sunday, February 28 for over two weeks of roping, riding, carnival rides, great food and incredible music. For 11 consecutive years now, this event has been named the “Indoor Rodeo of the Year” by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys’ Association (PRCA). It’s a big deal in the rodeo world and attracts the top competitors in the sport who will be competing for $1.6 million in prize money.
The nightly rodeo events fill the stadium with the smell of leather and livestock as cowboys (and cowgirls) show off their skills in speed events, in roping and tying, and of course, the main event where riders attempt to stay on the back of a wildly bucking and snorting 2,000 lb. bull for eight seconds. It’s a thrilling event that pits human skill against sheer muscle and flashing horns.
When the evening’s rodeo is over, world-class performers take over the stage to rock the stadium. This year’s entertainers include Martina McBride, Pitbull, Toby Keith, Casting Crowns, Jason Derulo, Trace Adkins, Brad Paisley, Alan Jackson and many more big names.
The fairgrounds offer many family-friendly, fun events and attractions, many with an emphasis on agricultural education for kids. The Texas Wildlife Expo, Little Buckaroo Farms, and Horse Discovery are just a few of the youth-oriented activities. The Livestock Show and Horse Show display award-winning, best-of-breed specimens of many types of livestock. A petting zoo allows kids a hands-on experience with the animals.
The Shops at the Rodeo’ showcase over 600 themed retailers offering items such as home furnishings, leather goods, equipment, boots and hats, jewelry and clothing. The fair also includes carnival rides and more food options than you can imagine.
Your rodeo ticket price includes rodeo events in the AT&T Center and the live musical events that follow the rodeo. A grounds admission ticket does not include the rodeo and musical events but gets you into the family fair, livestock and horse shows, the carnival, food and merchandise booths, and all other grounds attractions.
