July 4th is one of my favorite holidays. Not only am I very interested in our nation’s birth, I’m also a huge fan of barbecues, beer, and fireworks. What’s not to love?
There’s something very cool about celebrating an important date in American history in a place that is also a part of our country’s story — Fort Davis, an original frontier military post from the 1800s. This year, I plan to begin my celebrations at the town’s “Coolest 4th of July Celebration“, a family-friendly event that runs from June 30th through July 2nd. Fort Davis is a quaint community nestled in the heart of the Davis Mountains of West Texas. Besides its beautiful scenery and friendly townsfolk, Fort Davis is also known for its history. The Fort Davis National Historic Site has been heralded as one of the best preserved military forts in the Country, and well worth a visit. (Read the blog I wrote about Fort Davis a few years ago and more info about the area on the Tour Texas website.)
Fort Davis has the highest elevation of any town in Texas, resulting in some of the coolest temperatures in the state for the month of July. But that’s not the only reason their 4th of July event is the coolest. It’s because, besides featuring an exhilarating fireworks display at the Jeff Davis Co. Park on Sunday night, July 2nd, this incredible event also features parades, live music, vendors, arts and crafts, great food, country western dancing, a Kid Zone, and even a gunfight! Sounds pretty cool to me! You can find a listing of all of the events here.
After that, it’s back home for a family BBQ on the 4th…I told you I love to celebrate Independence Day!
I want to wish y’all a wonderful and safe 4th of July!
