Old Town Spring is a railroad boomtown that has reinvented itself. Just a short ride from downtown Houston and even closer to The Woodlands, you will find this little gem. There is great shopping in unique shops, art galleries, museums and what I like best is there are plenty of restaurants. So on my last visit I went to Wunsche Bros Café to sample their Chicken Fried Steak. Everyone thinks they have the best Chicken Fried Steak, but if you’ve been reading this blog, you (and I) know better.
Wunsche Bros. Café & Saloon originally opened as a hotel and Saloon in 1902. It’s the kind of place that looks like it will have a good Chicken Fried Steak. They didn’t disappoint.

The portion is huge, with a very good seasoned crust and excellent white gravy. The steak they use is Angus, and it showed (so did the price $12.00) It comes with your choice of 2 sides (I chose mashed potatoes which were buttery and creamy, but a very small portion and tasty green beans). Some of the meat was much thicker than the rest of the Chicken Fried Steak which made it a little chewy, but overall, one of the best I’ve had.
Most CFS comes with Texas Toast, but at Wunsche Bros. you get a thick slice of their famous beer bread which is a little sweet, but wonderful. You can even buy a Beer Bread Mix.
If you have a suggestion for where I should go next to find the best Chicken Fried Steak in Texas, post a note in the comments, and I'll try to get there as soon as possible.

Who is that mapped man? It's the Texas Travelin' Man.
