Chicken Fried Steak Review: T Bone Tom's in Kemah, TX

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 by The Texas Travelin' Man

This is the classic looking place where you would expect to find a great Chicken Fried Steak. What’s even more special about T Bone Tom’s is you will find a mixed bag of wonderful menu items. They have seafood, BBQ and unique appetizers that will have you coming back for more.

T Bone Tom's Chicken Fried Steak ReviewOne of their own creations is the Armadillo eggs. These are big pickled jalapeno peppers that are stuffed with their homemade brisket and their homemade bbq sauce covered in a seasoned flour coating and deep fried. You get 4 to an order with a side of ranch dressing. They also make their own polish style smoked sausage  and serve it sliced with their bbq sauce.

Now,  the reason for my visit. Their Chicken Fried Steak. They have 4 options to choose from. The Chicken Fried Steak sandwich with steak fries for $6.99 (they say it’s the best in the world), a small Chicken Fried Steak with a choice of 2 sides for $9.99 (Monday is the special of the day for $7.49),  a large Chicken Fried Steak for $13.99 and a kids Chicken Fried Steak fingers with curly fries for $5.49 (I wish someone would serve Moe or Larry fries just once).

T Bone Tom's Chicken Fried Steak Review - URating 4.They use top round steak at T Bone Tom’s and tenderize it to the point of  being fork tender. The portion size is 7 oz which is just perfect. They season the flour, coat the steak a few times then drop it in the hot oil. The result is one of the best Chicken Fried Steaks to date. The crispy coating  was perfectly seasoned and the meat was thin, juicy and tender with no gristle.  I lifted the Chicken Fried Steak to sop up the grease puddle, but there was none.

You have several choices of sides and to keep things consistent I went with mashed potatoes and green beans. Yes, the white gravy was on the side.  The mashed potatoes were excellent. They were a little more seasoned than I would have liked, but there were none left on my plate. The green beans tasted like they were just picked from the garden, and served. The constant with most of the green beans I’ve had with my Chicken Fried Steak is bacon. The bacon here was cooked  properly. The white gravy was perfectly seasoned and it had  great consistency.

As you may have noticed in my other posts, I do like a good smoky brisket and theirs looked and smelled great. I took a pound home with some of their bbq sauce and it didn’t disappoint. Smoky and tender.

State Fair of Texas

State Fair of Texas

Big TexI want to thank everyone who sent in their suggestions on how to experience the State Fair as a first timer.

Parking ($15.00) is everywhere and in most cases you will need to walk a bit to get into the Fair, but once in you will be walking everywhere. They do have a tram that takes you around the Fair and that’s not a bad way to get the lay of the land.
We saw a lot during the 6 hours we were at the Fair, but also missed a lot. One of the things I noticed was there were plenty of places to get away from the crowds and sit on the grass in the shade and just chill. But that’s not why you go to the Fair.

If you want rides and games, go to the Midway. You’ll find plenty to do there. I can’t understand why people put their money down to win a stuffed banana that’s the size of a human and then have to carry it around all day. But they do.Texas State Fair

OK, let’s talk about getting fried at the State Fair. We were ready to experience what we could without hurting ourselves. So here is what we had (and didn’t have) and what it cost.

The first thing was the Deep Fried Frito Pie which was the winner of the best taste this year. It cost 12 coupons (each coupon is $.50 and they sell them everywhere). You get 6 pieces. Very good, but the regular Frito pie would have filled you up. This booth is located near Big Tex.

Next was fried cheese curds for 10 coupons. Very salty and good. Chicken fried bacon for 10 coupons (not good). Fletcher’s Corny Dog for 10 coupons. I was told it had to be a Fletcher’s and they were right.  Fried Macaroni & Cheese for 8 coupons (very good). Fried Twinkies for 6 coupons (what do you think). Fried Snickers (I forgot how many coupons. I was mesmerized by the taste). The best according to our taste was the fried peaches and cream for 10 coupons.

Texas State FairThere were probably a dozen more fried foods to try, but we had it. The one food I was looking forward to was the fried beer which won for the most creative. I heard from several people that it was terrible, so I passed.

The State Fair goes until October 17, so there is still time to raise your cholesterol and pass a good time.

Heart of Texas Fair & Rodeo - Waco, Texas

Tuesday, October 12, 2010 by The Texas Travelin' Man
Heart of Texas Fair & Rodeo, WacoHeart of Texas Fair & Rodeo
This was my first visit to the Heart of Texas Fair & Rodeo (HOT) and I wasn’t sure if it was my cup of tea, but it was. The midway was jumping, the food was frying and the pigs and wiener dogs were racing. And yes the cowboys and cowgirls were rodeoing (that’s my new word)

This was my second visit to Waco in the past year. During my first visit, I got to experience the Dr. Pepper Museum (Waco is the home of Dr. Pepper), The Texas Ranger Museum, The Mayborn Museum at Baylor University and wished I had more time to see the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, Homestead Heritage and many more of Waco’s attractions. Find out more about what Waco has to offer.
Heart of Texas Fair & Rodeo
This time I concentrated on the HOT. I can’t remember the last time I was in the middle of so much livestock. Probably never.  We entered through the Livestock arena and couldn’t believe the pampering that went on. From the brushing to the hair blowing to the loving. These animals were the pride of their owners.

HOT Weiner Dog RacesThe first major event was the Wiener Dog Nationals. Not being that familiar with wiener dogs, I couldn’t believe the colors of these dogs. To watch these wieners race was the perfect way to start the day. We kept the racing theme going. It was off to the Bacona 500 races (Pig Races)

Who knew pigs liked Oreo cookies?

Yes, after the pig races it was time for Sausage on a Stick (sorry guys).
The Heartland’s Got Talent auditions were in progress and I wasn’t expecting much, but I was again pleasantly surprised with the quality of talent.

We saw Cloggers, a magician, dance troops, and just had a great time.
The little piggies got into the action.
The main event was the Livestock and Rodeo show at night. The events center was the perfect place.

Could be my next Chicken Fried Steak...
Could be my next Chicken Fried Steak review

The Heart of Texas Fair & Rodeo goes until October 16, so if you want to experience a relaxing fun time, make your way to Waco.

Chicken Fried Steak Review: Novrozsky's in Beaumont

Thursday, September 9, 2010 by The Texas Travelin' Man
When does a small group of restaurants become a chain?

Novrozsky's to find the best Chicken Fried Steak in TexasWhen a restaurant has more than 5 restaurants? When it has more than 10? I consider a chain to be a restaurant that has more than 12 locations that look the same, smell the same and have the same menu.

This is a difficult question to answer, and based on what’s going on in the world today, the answer wouldn’t solve the problems.

As you know, I’m not a big fan of chain restaurants and I won’t go to one for a Chicken Fried Steak...

I was looking for a Chicken Fried Steak in the Beaumont area and came across Novrozsky’s. I found out they had 7 Texas locations and 1 Louisiana location. Is this a chain? Not according to me. I chose the Vidor location and when I drove up, I almost drove away. It looks like a fast food restaurant from the outside and the inside looks like it is going to become a chain. But I stayed.

You order from the counter, pay and wait until your number is called. I asked the counter person how big is the small Chicken Fried Steak? He placed his thumb and fore finger on each hand and showed me how big a small is. Kind of like this (     ). He said the large is 2 steaks (    )  (    ). The only side you get is french fries plus Texas Toast. The small Chicken Fried Steak is $5.95 and it’s a 4 oz portion. The large is $8.75 with 2- 4 oz portions. The small is plenty. They also have a Chicken Fried Steak sandwich at $5.25.  One of their slogans is “Size Still Matters”. You get plenty for your money.Novrozsky's Chicken Fried Steak

Here are the facts: Everything is cooked to order. When you order the Chicken Fried Steak, they bread it and then fry it. The meat is very tender, juicy and they use 100% all natural, hormone-free beef, raised in Texas by Nolan Ryan. No bull.  There was no grease on the plate. The breading was very seasoned, crunchy and  stayed on the steak. The white gravy was the thickest I’ve had, so a little went a long way. Both were seasoned with salt and a nice peppery flavor. The fries were not good. No taste and not hot. I had no problem with that as I saved the calories.

Chicken Fried Steak Check In: Neal's Restaurant in Spring

Friday, August 27, 2010 by The Texas Travelin' Man
Neal's Restaurant

Neal's Restaurant - Chicken Fried Steak ReviewA lot of people suggested I go to Neal’s in Spring for their Chicken Fried Steak, so I did. The interior has lots of animals hanging from the walls and it’s the kind of place that you would expect to find a good CFS. Lots of people sitting near me ordered the CFS as I did. You have some choices to make. Every day the CFS is one of two specials. You get the CFS, 2 veggies and dessert for $6.47. This is what I recommend if you have to have the CFS. The other options are a CFS sandwich with fries for $6.29, or the small CFS for $8.99 (4 oz) or the large for $10.99 (2-4 oz patties). You also get a choice of 2 sides.

I ordered the large. That was my first mistake. I chose Neal's Chicken Fried Steakas my sides, green beans which were average, and their potato casserole which is like a twice baked potato with cheese and onions  baked in a casserole. This was the best part of my meal. The breading on the CFS was very good and there was no grease on the bottom. The meat, it turns out is pounded thin and then folded over in some places. If you look at the left patty you can see the hump. CFS’s shouldn’t have humps. Camels have humps. CFS doesn’t stand for Camel Fried Steak. The meat was good and tender. The seasoning was very light on both the meat and breading, but they totally forgot to  season the gravy. It was difficult to dip the Chicken Fried Steak in the bland gravy. I even tried to doctor it up, but it didn’t work.

4 Udder Chicken Fried Steak at Max's Wine Dive

Friday, August 27, 2010 by The Texas Travelin' Man
Chicken Fried Steak Review: Max's Wine Dive

At Max's Wine Bar for the Chicken Fried SteakWhen I read that a Dive in Houston was serving a Prime NY Strip Chicken Fried Steak with Truffle gravy I thought I found Chicken Fried Steak Nirvana. It came close but, I did find a Dive that I will go back to several times for the rest of their unique twist on comfort food menu (and a return visit to their CFS).

Just a few minutes from downtown you’ll find a 4 year old 73 seat dive (this is the hippest dive I’ve been to) where you can find some great wines and gourmet comfort food. You know how I feel about chains, and Max’s will soon have three locations. That does not constitute a chain. Their Austin location opened June 2009 and San Antonio will open October 2010.
Red Velvet Pancakes at Max's Wine Bar
I decided to make my first visit to Max’s Wine Dive for Sunday Brunch. Their Chicken Fried Steak  for Sunday Brunch was only $16.99, while their dinner price for the same is $24.00 (there are a few differences in the gravy and the sides).

Before I get to the Chicken Fried Steak I want to talk about something that really caught my eye on the menu. Red Velvet Pancakes with a lemon cream cheese frosting and a side of maple syrup. The photo displays their small portion (which is not on the menu, but if you ask nicely, they will make them for you). Wonderful, but we shared the small and it was plenty.

Now back to the reason I came to Max’s Wine Dive. The NY Prime Strip Chicken Fried Steak. This is one of the smallest and most expensive Chicken Fried Steaks I’ve had, but with Prime  Beef, and truffle gravy, you will pay more. My only mistake was to not have the truffle gravy on the side. I’ve mentioned this in the past that you need to order the gravy on the side. I have to read my blog more often to remember this.

Max's Wine Bar's Chicken Fried Steak earned a healthy 4 on the URating.

The Chicken Fried Steak is marinated in jalapeno and buttermilk and is surrounded  by a seasoned flour breading. It tastes great. Do not share this. There’s not enough to go around.

The meat was tasty and tender and did I tell you it was Prime Beef? You actually chew a solid piece of meat that hasn’t been pounded to death and there was no gristle.  The (white) truffle gravy is made with black truffle cream. Why not? Truffles are somewhat of an acquired taste, but I acquired that taste years ago. You can put truffles on my Jello and it would be the best Jello I’ve had.  I wasn’t sure what I should do with the 2 fried eggs, so I just put them on top of the Chicken Fried Steak (did I say it was a piece of Prime NY Strip?), and dug in.  The home fries were crispy with some onion and jalapeno. Very good.

Max's Wine Dive scored a 4 on the URating.

Luxury Escape to the Woodlands

Tuesday, August 24, 2010 by The Texas Travelin' Man
Special events in one’s life should warrant special treatment. So when a special event in my life was approaching I needed to come up with a plan that was fun, special, different and do-able (time and money).

I was looking for a luxury hotel that was affordable and somewhere I could build 24 hours of fun around. This was more difficult than I thought as there are so many choices in and around Houston that fit the bill.
  • Should it be a major luxury chain?
  • Should it be a resort within a few hours of Houston?
  • Or, should it be a B&B to escape to?
After going on the internet (obviously I went to TourTexas.com first), I decided that The Woodlands would be the destination and The AVIA in Market Street would be the hotel.

The AVIA
The AVIA opened in Dec 2009 and in a short period of time they have managed to figure out that if you treat the customer special, give them a great hotel room or suite and price it right, they will come back for more.  This 70 rooms/suites little gem has the best all around staff I have seen in any of the hotels I’ve stayed.
The Avia Hotel

We stayed in a Grand Suite which has a seating area before you get to the king bedroom. Everything about the suite says welcome and relax. They have a restaurant and lounge as well as an infinity pool and fitness room.

So how did we spend our 24 hours?

Hubbell and HudsonWe started out at Hubbell & Hudson Market & Bistro where we just strolled around and marveled at the selection and quality of everything. They also have so many items I grew up with and haven’t seen for years. With quality and items you don’t see every day comes higher prices. Even if you don’t buy anything, it’s a great place to just walk around (but I’ll bet you buy something. We did).

Market Street in the Woodlands
We then went to Market Street to window shop. And yes, we bought several little things that we probably could have done without, but that’s what you do when you get away.  Plenty of unique  shops, and plenty of places to have a light meal or something more special.

The SpaIt was time for some pampering.  A body massage and reflexology. There are plenty of spas in The Woodlands to choose from, and after doing some homework I narrowed it down to two and finally chose the Spa at the Waterway inside the Marriott Hotel. It’s a very welcoming relaxing spa, with prices  and facilities that are comparable to the others. According to Mrs. The Texas Travelin’ Man, it was the perfect spot. The treatments, the masseuse and the complimentary glass of wine was the perfect recipe for an afternoon of pampering.

So after the pampering, it was back to the AVIA to relax for an hour and then get ready for dinner.

Guri do sul Brazilian Steakhouse

Guri do sul Brazilian SteakhouseThis may not sound like the place to choose for a special dinner when you have so many great restaurants to choose from, but we both like the concept of the Brazilian Steakhouses and Mrs. The Texas Travelin’ Man loves the Gauchos. As Brazilian Steakhouses go in the Houston area, this ranks toward the top of the list. They are not as good as Fogo de Chao, but no one in the area is. They have a good variety of salads and cold vegetables to choose from and the usual cuts of meat that you would expect, but they also have a grilled shrimp that you just can’t get enough of. Let them know it’s your birthday or anniversary and they may surprise you with something special.

Happy Birthday The Mrs Texas Travelin' Man!

After all that food and a special dessert, which was fantastic, we wound up back at Hubbell & Hudson for a night cap. Homemade gelato.

Before we knew it the morning came and it was time to go back to reality, but the memories will last forever.

The Texas Travelin' Man's Multi-Generational Vacation to San Antonio - Final Day

Friday, August 6, 2010 by The Texas Travelin' Man
Day 4 - Natural Bridge Caverns, Celebrating its 50th year
Just 35 minutes from the Springhill Suites/Six Flags, and a must visit, especially if you have never been to a Cavern before. We have been deprived of this experience, so we went. What we didn’t have time to do was experience the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch which is located next door.

Natural Bridge CavernsWe did the Discovery Tour which was about 75 minutes long with a guide. There was plenty of time to take pictures (if you have the right camera. Most of the pictures did not come out). You must wear shoes as the walk down and back up are steep and wet in places. Flip flops just won’t work. If you are very, very claustrophobic you may have a problem. I am, but there was only a very short period of time I felt it. The scenery and narration helps you forget your claustrophobia.

$17.95/adult; $9.95/child 3-11

Splashtown:

The grand kids didn’t get enough of the water parks at SeaWorld (even though they got soaked from Shamu, the raft ride and the log ride) and Six Flags, they wanted to go to a full fledged water park. So we opted to go to Splashtown because it was closer, we figured it would be less crowded  and we had to leave early to make our dinner reservations.  Everyone did have a great time in the wave pool, on the slides and along the lazy river. I especially enjoyed myself as I stayed under a large covered area next to the lazy river and people watched.

Splashtown was not crowded, but it was very tired looking. It does need a makeover. I think I’m safe in saying that The Water Park to choose is The Schlitterbahn.  Go the extra miles, pay the extra price and wait in lines if you have to.

Dinner at
The Chart House atop the Tower of the Americas:

Chart HouseThere are so many great restaurants to choose from in San Antonio to celebrate the end of a great vacation and a birthday (The Texas Travelin’ Man had a birthday). We were going to choose a restaurant along the Riverwalk, but I decided it would be special for the grand kids to experience a revolving restaurant high above the city (plus it would be much cooler than eating outside). It was perfect, except for the people facing the window looking out as the sun was in their eyes. The waitstaff and the food was right on the money. Speaking of money, it was more expensive than I expected, but good food, good service and good atmosphere comes at a price (and someone has to pay to have the restaurant spin around). The perfect ending to a perfect vacation with family.

As I mentioned in Part 1 of this blog, the kids and grand kids were an important part in the planning of this Multi-Generational Vacation so I thought I would let you hear what they had to say.

The Texas Travelin' Man's Multi-Generational Vacation to San Antonio - Days 2 & 3

Friday, August 6, 2010 by The Texas Travelin' Man
Day 2 - Six Flags Fiesta Texas

Six FlagsWe had a major decision to make once we got into Six Flags (it was a Saturday). Do we invest in a Flash Pass for everyone, or do we fight the lines.  We went to the Flash Pass building inside the park and one of the employees tried to explain the 3 different options available to eliminate 50, 60 or 90% of the wait. I think it was easier to buy pork belly futures than it was to understand what these options were. Plus they were very costly. We opted not to buy and we made the right decision. We only had 2 long waits. About 1 hour for the Gully Washer and about 45 minutes for the Bugs’ White Water Rapids.

When it was time to eat you have several choices that are very familiar to the masses. Restaurants like Johnny Rockets, Papa John’s and Panda Express. I almost forgot about Dippin’ Dots. You will need a second mortgage for these, but I dare you to tell your kids (or grand kids “no”).

Things we didn’t like at Six Flags:
•    Prices for food & beverages at Six Flags are more expensive than at SeaWorld.
•    Most of the soda machines were out of order.
•    They were selling Timeshares at 2 locations inside the park and I thought that was very tacky. They also had a local insurance company passing out cards to go to their website. Tacky again.
•    The wait at Bugs’ White Water Rapids was mostly indoors that were 8 lanes deep. The problem was there was no air circulating. There were air vents, but nothing was coming out. It could have been a potential health disaster.
•    On the Bugs’, Gully  and most other rides, they never told you how long the wait was. They need to take a look at SeaWorld’s approach to giving you wait times for each ride.

I can say this about Six Flags Fiesta Texas:  if you want to ride some of the best roller coasters in the country, you found the place. And there are plenty of rides for smaller kids and the wait is very minimal.
Six Flags has some of the greatest roller coasters in the country.

Day 3 – San Antonio Zoo
What a great place for children of all ages. The zoo is very a compact 56 acres, and easy to navigate. It has more animals than you would expect with over 3,500 representing 600 species (I lost count after 2,144).

San Antonio ZooThere are several indoor exhibits to cool you down and the prices for drinks and food are very reasonable. By the way, the food was exceptionally good. There was one problem that we experienced. Let’s just say the air was not the freshest it could be in certain parts of the zoo. You expect a zoo to have a slight odor, but this was odorously different (is that even a word?)

The zoo is open 365 days a year from 9 am – 5 pm and only costs $10/adult; $8/child 3-11; and free for kids under 3. Parking is also free.San Antonio Zoo

You do have to be aware that if you want to take the train ride, it will cost you $3.00/adult; $2.50/ child 3-11. The zoo’s website shows a big picture of the train but does not say it’s extra until you go to the General Info Page.

Day 4 and my wrap up later in the week - thank for tagging along with our multi-generational vacation.  If you've taken a multi-generational vacation, let me know some highlights of the trip and what it meant for you and your family.

The Texas Travelin' Man's Multi-Generational Vacation to San Antonio

Thursday, August 5, 2010 by The Texas Travelin' Man
Deciding where to go on vacation is a major decision especially when there are 3 generations to make happy. So over the next several posts you will see what we did, how we did it and how it turned out.

In the past my daughters have gone to Florida's Gulf Coast, but after talking with their kids, they decided San Antonio was the place they wanted to visit, so they called The Texas Travelin’ Man (they don’t call me that) and asked my opinion. The only drawback was that one of them had to drive 11 hours (from Gulfport, MS) and the other 10 hours (from Slidell). When they said that was no problem, I said it was the perfect place for all of us.  (I do have to say, they made this decision prior to the Oil Gusher in the Gulf.)

So after my kids and their kids went online to look at the major attractions in San Antonio, I was asked to put the trip together.

We had 4 full days to enjoy San Antonio and I’m telling you right up front, that’s not enough time. Here was our itinerary:

Who are those mapped kids?Day 1:  SeaWorld
Day 2:  Six Flags
Day 3:  San Antonio Zoo and friend’s pool (their pool is not listed in any of the brochures)
Day 4:  Natural Bridge Caverns,  Splashtown & farewell dinner at The Tower of the Americas
The word for the week was "Awesome." After the rides and during the shows, the only word that expressed their feelings was Awesome!

So the journey begins.

I scoured the internet to try to find the best deal on a hotel. My criteria was a hotel that was convenient to everything, family friendly  and cost effective. I am somewhat familiar with the San Antonio hotels as my good friends have been in the hotel industry in San Antonio forever.
  • My first choice was a Hilton brand hotel, but their rates were not what I wanted.
  • My second choice was a Marriott brand hotel and I found one that fit the bill. The Springhill Suites by Marriott, Medical Center, Six Flags. The rate was $89/night for a suite with complimentary hot continental breakfast (make your own waffles), indoor (small) pool, free local calls and free internet. It’s located on I-10 just 10 minutes from Six Flags, 25 minutes from SeaWorld, 20 minutes from downtown and 35 minuteEnjoy San Antonios from Natural Bridge Caverns. This is a limited service hotel, and there were some challenges with housekeeping (but now-a-days with limited staffing, many hotels have the same problems). That being said, the hotel is one of the newer ones, the suites were very spacious, clean and I would return.

You also need to contact the San Antonio Convention & Visitors Bureau and request a visitors packet. You will find everything you need to enjoy your trip.

Also, if you know someone in San Antonio, have them visit one of the hotels closest to them. In the lobby they will find a rack of brochures with discount coupons. Have them mail you these brochures. There are several sites that you can find Visit San Antonioonline to get these discount coupons as well. Always go to the website of the attraction you plan to visit  where you will find all the latest information and possibly discount coupons.

Back to the San Antonio Convention & Visitors Bureau. They have a program called S.A.V.E., which stands for San Antonio Vacation Experience. This is one of the most comprehensive places to find discounts to hotels and attractions.

Day 1 - SeaWorld
Please see the blog I posted on July 8, 2010 as it will give you plenty of information to help you experience SeaWorld to its fullest.

See amazement at Sea WorldWe arrived at SeaWorld as the gates opened and left after the final show which was Azul. This was on a Friday and the lines were not as bad as I expected. We decided not to do the Quick Queue Pass and the longest wait we had was about 1 hour for the Rio Loco Raft Ride.  If you read my previous post about Azul, I raved about how great it was. I was told the last show which began at 8:45 pm was even better. It was. The colors, the energy of the performers and the crowd, were the best I’ve seen.

The favorite ride at SeaWorld was Journey to Atlantis. They rode it 3 times. It was the first ride when we arrived at the park (we had to wait about 15 minutes until the ride opened), but we went right on (and it was the last ride of the day before Azul.)
Check out Azul and Journey to Atlantis on your next trip to Sea World!
Believe it or not, we ran out of time and didn’t see everything we wanted to see at SeaWorld. If you want to do it right, without rushing, take 2 days to see and do everything SeaWorld has to offer.

Check back next week as I'll be sharing days 2 (Six Flags) and 3 (San Antonio Zoo).

The Search for the Best Chicken Fried Steak in Texas Continues: Mel's Country Cafe

Wednesday, July 28, 2010 by The Texas Travelin' Man
Tour Texas CFS blog: Well I’m here to tell you not only did
Mel’s Country Cafe make my list, it shot to the top.A few months ago, when I asked for suggestions on who has the best Chicken Fried Steak in Texas, Mel’s Country Café in Tomball did not make the list. According to the comments I received, Goodson’s was the best in Tomball, and one of the best in Texas. Well I’m here to tell you not only did Mel’s make my list it shot to the top.

Here’s why:

This was one of the thinnest Chicken Fried Steaks I’ve had, with a thin breading. The breading had a nice peppery seasoning, but it was the meat that was tasty and moist. It could have been cut with a fork. As always, I got the creamy white gravy on the side. The gravy by itself wasn’t as seasoned as others, but once you dip the Chicken Fried Steak into it, it’s heavenly.

You have several Chicken Fried Steak options:

•    Chicken Fried Steak Sandwich 6 oz. $5.50
•    Chicken Fried Steak Salad (for those who are on a diet?) 8 oz $6.95
•    Chicken Fried Steak small 8 oz $9.95 (this is what I had)
•    Chicken Fried Steak large 16 oz $14.95
•    Kids portion of Chicken Fried Steak 6 oz $5.95 (with one side)

Tour Texas CFS blog: This was one of the thinnest Chicken Fried Steaks I’ve had, with a thin breading. They warn you on the menu that all entrees are prepared in-house and cooked to order, so it may take a little longer than other restaurants. Service was perfect. With your Chicken Fried Steak entrée you get 2 sides. I got a large portion of mashed potatoes with their creamy gravy, which was very good, and green beans. The green beans were good but not great. No Texas Toast here to waste calories.

There is a podium outside on the porch with a sign that says "wait to be seated." If there’s no one waiting outside, go in. It means you’ll be seated immediately.

Here is the story behind Mel’s Country Café.

Chicken Fried Steak Review: Wunsche Bros. Cafe & Saloon

Monday, July 19, 2010 by The Texas Travelin' Man
Old Town Spring is a railroad boomtown that has reinvented itself. Just a short ride from downtown Houston and even closer to The Woodlands, you will find this little gem.

There is great shopping in unique shops, art galleries, museums and what I like best is there are plenty of restaurants. So on my last visit I went to Wunsche Bros Café to sample their Chicken Fried Steak. Everyone thinks they have the best Chicken Fried Steak, but if you’ve been reading this blog, you (and I) know better.

Wunsche Bros. Café & Saloon originally opened as a hotel and Saloon in 1902. It’s the kind of place that looks like it will have a good Chicken Fried Steak. They didn’t disappoint.

The portion is huge, with a very good seasoned crust and excellent white gravy. The steak they use is Angus, and it showed (so did the price $12.00) It comes with your choice of 2 sides (I chose mashed potatoes which were buttery and creamy, but a very small portion and tasty green beans).  Some of the meat was much thicker than the rest of the Chicken Fried Steak which made it a little chewy, but overall, one of the best I’ve had.

Most CFS comes with Texas Toast, but at Wunsche Bros. you get a thick slice of their famous beer bread which is a little sweet, but wonderful. You can even buy a Beer Bread Mix.

If you have a suggestion for where I should go next to find the best Chicken Fried Steak in Texas, post a note in the comments, and I'll try to get there as soon as possible.

Enjoy SeaWorld San Antonio as if you owned the place.

Lost Lagoon Hours:

August: Hours vary. Click Lost Lagoon above for specific times

Here’s how to enjoy SeaWorld San Antonio as if you owned the place.

1.      Buy your admission ticket in advance. Several different options.

The best option for families is to buy a full price adult admission ticket for $58.99 and a $5.00 Child's ticket (3-12 yrs) http://www.seaworldcares.com/ This is a great way to help Wildlife Conservation.

2.      Purchase a “Quick Queue” Pass.

Just show your pass to the staff at any of the rides and he or she will let you go in the side entrance by passing the line. You can only go thru once on most of the rides. The cost is $15.00 per person. Make sure your child meets the height requirements for the rides before you pay for the QQ . The QQ will allow you to maximize your visit, see so much more, and you will avoid hearing your children say” I’m hot, and bored. How much longer? When I was there last, waits were anywhere from 45 minutes to 1:15 minutes.

3.      All Day Dining wrist band.
This will allow you to eat as much as you want from the six restaurants. Now there is a limit each time you go thru, but you can go thru as many times as you want. You can also just get a drink, or a bottled water at any of the restaurants as well. TIP> Eat during show times and at off hours if possible. Lines will be shorter. Also if you are just getting a bottled drink, you can go in past the cashier, go to the cooler, take your drink, show the cashier your wrist band and you are on your way. Just to give you an idea of the food prices. An average adult meal will cost around $15-$20 and an average child’s meal will cost around $8.00.

Strollers/Wheelchairs

You can bring your own, but SeaWorld San Antonio has plenty to rent.

Bringing Food/Beverage into SWSA

SWSA allows certain items in the park. Please click above for specifics.

Parking $15.00. You can upgrade to preferred parking for $5 more.

What happens if it rains.

You’ll get wet. You’ll dry off. Click the link above to find out exactly what the policy is.

Map

After you enter the park there are maps all over the place. You must have a map for several reasons. First so you know how to get to where you want to go. It also shows you the times of the shows, what the shows are all about, and where the restaurants are.

Shows

All the shows are good, but their newest show, Azul, is not to be missed. I saw it in the afternoon, but I hear that the evening show is even more spectacular. Make sure you get there earlier than the published start time to get a good seat and look for some strange things happening in the audience. Wink wink. Nudge nudge. Other shows have some pre show antics as well.

Restaurants

Each restaurant is different in theme and food. The most expensive restaurant is Rio Loco Bar-b-que, but if you bought the all day dining plan, who cares. Be patient, some food lines can be long. Food is good quality, fresh and filling. Tip: The Shamu chocolate chip cookies in a Shamu bowl are VERY filling. There are 3 of them, and one is enough. Make sure you have something to wash it down with.

Shamu!Lockers  To avoid having to carry all your stuff around the park, you can get an all day locker for $14.00 (front entrance or by the Lost Lagoon water park). When you return the key, you get a $5 gift card for merchandise or food. You can also get a onetime use locker for $1. These are located outside of Rio Loco, Texas Splashdown, Happy Harbor, The Great White, Steel Eel, and Journey to Atlantis.

Feeding the animals On your Map (that you get at the entrance) there is a feeding schedule. Here are the costs for feeding:  $6 - tray of fish at Dolphin Cove, $5 - tray of fish at Rocky Point Preserve, and $4 - cup of nectar at Lorikeet Landing. (prices are subject to change). You cannot use your All Day Dining Pass to feed the animals. Sorry.

A couple of valuable tips:

  • When you are planning to go to a theme park, always bring a few sandwich plastic zip lock bags. You can place your wallet, cell phone and anything else you don’t want to get wet.

  • Give your children a coach’s whistle in case they get lost. Put it on a ribbon so they can wear it around their neck. The sound may be annoying, but, you will be able to find them quicker.
